In modern medical technology, drive systems must meet the highest demands. In addition to strict safety and hygiene standards, they must also be compact enough to fit into the often limited space within medical devices. For example, to enable surgical robots to perform dynamic movements, a high power density with clever spatial arrangement is essential. Abrasive wear that could increase backlash is unacceptable – this is the only way to achieve the high precision required.
speeroX meets these requirements and is tailored to specific application parameters. In this project, a speeroX gear set was developed for an already conceptualised drive system – the RAD (Right Angle Drive) from maxon. The speeroX gearing was designed within the defined interface parameters and optimised for load capacity and manufacturability. Given its use in the medical field, precision, reliability, and safety were the key priorities.
The subsequent two-year validation phase was successfully completed, highlighting the innovative gearbox and motor expertise of maxon, combined with Framo Morat’s extensive experience in gear technology. maxon and Framo Morat are now taking the next step together, moving towards series production and assembly. The speeroX gear sets are being manufactured to meet the highest medical standards and are integrated into the RAD right angle drives.
The robust design of the drive system – which includes both a speeroX right angle stage and a planetary stage – ensures durable and safe operation in medical environments. Despite its robust design, the RAD Right Angle Drive remains lightweight, making it ideally suited for use in cutting-edge surgical robots. The gearbox’s minimal backlash also ensures maximum precision for highly complex robotic tasks.
Through its partnership with Framo Morat, maxon has integrated the innovative speeroX gear technology into its technology portfolio, winning over initial customers. The RAD enables precise and efficient power transmission, allowing it to meet the demanding requirements of modern medical technology. The close cooperation between maxon and Framo Morat has demonstrated that – particularly in challenging sectors such as medical technology – the future of drive technology can be shaped through shared innovation and expertise.
